TRAUMA & THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
*Trauma and the Nervous System*
This page offers general, educational information about trauma and the nervous system and is not intended as medical or diagnostic guidance.
Trauma is an emotional or psychological response to a distressing event or experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. The amygdala, a key player in our brain’s stress response, acts as a sort of “alarm system,” detecting potential threats and sounding the alert.
*Survival Response: Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn*
When we face a threat, our nervous system triggers a survival response, preparing our body to react with fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. This natural response is meant to protect us from harm. However, when the threat passes, our body is designed to complete the survival response cycle, releasing the stored energy and returning to a state of balance.
*Consequences of Unresolved Trauma*
When the body’s natural energy flow is disrupted and remains unresolved, this can create physical and emotional imbalances, leading to chronic stress, anxiety, and various physical ailments. This unprocessed trauma, if left unresolved, can also contribute to the development of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). PTSD is a condition that arises when the trauma isn’t properly processed, leading to symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviors.
*Effective Therapies for Trauma*
Therapies like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), and somatic stress release can help individuals complete the survival response cycle, releasing the trapped energy and allowing the nervous system to return to balance.
Notably, EMDR can facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic memories, essentially “moving” them from the amygdala to long-term storage in the brain. EFT calms the stress response through meridian tapping. Matrix reimprinting is a technique that allows individuals to revisit and reframe past traumatic experiences, working with the energetic imprints left by those events.
By reimprinting these memories with new, empowering perspectives and emotions, individuals can transform the associated sensations and release deeply held trauma, promoting profound healing and recovery. These therapies can be powerful tools in healing from trauma and restoring overall health and well-being.
